The expansion of new media and the challenges that it brings to the new communication landscape is in the spotlight of current research. The use of new communication technologies and their impact on the society are still to be debated and understood. The goal of this conference is to examine the reconfigurations of the public sphere in the context of the current social, economic, political and cultural transformations in the global world. We seek papers that deal empirically and conceptually with the concept of the public sphere and look into the redefinitions of the ‘public’ and the ‘private’, triggered by the new media. We also seek papers that examine the role of the new technology in the process of democratization and identity building in the virtual public sphere. We welcome papers with a cross-cultural and multinational perspective and that take a multidisciplinary approach.

In view of the success of previous editions held in Bucharest (2011) and Lyon (2012) respectively, this year’s International Conference aims to cover a wide range of topics in communication, media studies, journalism and related fields and to bring together scholars and experts from different parts of the world. The 2012 edition of the conference jointly organized in Lyon by the three partner institutions gathered participants from countries such as France, Austria, Romania, United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, India, Malaysia, Kuwait, Australia, United States and Turkey.
